I am so pleased I received a copy of this moving novel. I haven’t read anything by Bernice L McFadden previously, but the blurb caught my attention. Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK Vintage for a free ARC of this book. McFadden is the author of the novels Gathering of Waters, Glorious , and This Bitter Earth. To read this novel is to take a journey through loss and suffering to a place of forgiveness, understanding, and grace. Sugar brings a Southern African-American town vividly to life, with its flowering magnolia trees, lingering scents of jasmine and honeysuckle, and white picket fences that keep strangers out–but ignorance and superstition in. ![]() Over sweet-potato pie, an unlikely friendship begins, transforming both women’s lives–and the life of an entire town. Sugar moves next door to Pearl, who is still grieving for the daughter who was murdered fifteen years before. With Wyrd Sisters we reach the full appearance of one of my favourite character groups and I think a moment when Pratchett really takes a lot of lessons from the previous books and this one soars confidently. I liked Equal Rites when I read it but it did feel a little loose with an interesting character but put in a rambling and rushed plot. ![]() They say that sometimes acorns lead to great oaks. ![]() ![]() ![]() Christie cleverly uses the village setting to create a sense of paranoia and suspicion, and Miss Marple is the perfect detective to solve the crime.
